Auschwitz-Birkenau |
|||
Auschwitz-Birkenau Auschwitz is a symbol of genocide, terror and the Holocaust. It is also a memorial of human heroism, solidarity and resistance to crime and terror. But first of all, Auschwitz is a grave hiding ashes of uncountable people who were killed or died here during World War II. KL Autschwitz, was established near the town of Oświęcim, which like other parts of the former 2nd Republic of Poland, was under German occupation during World War II. The date of 14th June, 1940 when the first group of political prisoners was brought to Auschwitz is symbolically regarded as the date when the Auschwitz Concentration Camp (KL) was established. Over years which followed, the camp was extended and eventually consisted of three main parts: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and Auschwitz III-Monowitz (and more than 40 sub-camps in the area), to become the place of a mass murder unknown to mankind's history before. The Nazi murder was stopped when the soldiers of the Soviet Army entered the camp on 27th January, 1945, but the tragedy of the victims did not end as it has been still in thoughts of those, who survived, who lost their relatives and friends and who struggle against evil in order to ensure that no more crime like that may be committed in the future. The grounds and structures of the former KL Auschwitz were protected and turned into theMuseum-Memorial by virtue of the Polish Parliament act of 2nd July 1947. The site was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
